What Is Berberine?

Berberine is a yellow-coloured alkaloid found in several plants including Barberry (Berberis vulgaris), Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), and Oregon Grape (Mahonia aquifolium). It has a documented history of use in both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, and has attracted substantial modern research interest due to its effects on metabolic function.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Berberine the same as Metformin?

No. Berberine activates AMPK through a different mechanism than Metformin. Both affect glucose metabolism through AMPK-related pathways but they are not the same compound. Berberine is a dietary supplement; Metformin is a prescription drug with a much larger safety and efficacy evidence base in diagnosed diabetes. They should never be combined without medical supervision.
