What does GDU mean on a Bromelain label?
GDU (Gelatin Digesting Units) is a measure of proteolytic enzyme activity. Two products with the same milligram dose of Bromelain may have very different GDU activity depending on the quality and concentration of the enzyme preparation. A 500mg Bromelain at 2400 GDU/gram is meaningfully more active than a 500mg Bromelain at 600 GDU/gram.
Is Bromelain from pineapple cores or pineapple fruit?
Commercial Bromelain is extracted primarily from the stem (core) of the pineapple rather than the fruit. Stem Bromelain has higher proteolytic activity and is more concentrated than fruit Bromelain. This is why Bromelain supplements can provide therapeutic doses in milligrams while eating pineapple provides trace amounts in grams.
